Memorizing Scripture

I'll be honest, memorizing scripture is not my strong suite. I can usually recall pieces of a verse and the book, but not the actual verse. Many of my conversations about scripture start with "there's a verse in there somewhere that says something along the lines of..." I can tell you the general idea, but not the actual words.

When I realized that I was fumbling with scripture that is living and dwelling in hearts, and completely butchering it, I felt like I needed to get serious about memorizing scripture. I started sticking some note cards around the house, in my car and on my phone screen, but it didn't take long for them to become a mundane part of my daily scenery. I honestly didn't even see the neon yellow index card taped on my bathroom mirror after a few days.

I looked around and thought to myself, what do I spend most of my time doing, using and looking at? Easy answer: my phone. I had a verse I had been working on for a few weeks, so I decided to enter the chapter and verse numbers as the pass code on my phone.

Let us therefore make every effort to do
what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
— Romans 14:19

If the verse is Romans 14:19 my pass code becomes 1 4 1 9. The first couple of days I kept entering in my old one, and every time the error message popped up it served as a reminder, what was that verse again? I had to consciously press the numbers, even when I was distracted and grabbing my phone during a show, or while cooking, I was still thinking 1 4 1 9. I also got in the habit of saying the verse when I unlocked my phone, and not using my apps until I got all the way through the verse. Eventually, it stuck.

Fast forward several months: I was recently dealing with a conflict and having a really hard time figuring out how to respond well. After several weeks of frustration I thought, what does the bible say about this? I was standing in the copy room at work, so I wasn't able to go grab my bible or google what the bible says about conflict resolution, but a thought suddenly popped into my mind, I know a verse about this. What is that verse? It was my pass code. Something with a 4. 41..no. 14. 1 4 1 9. 14:19, Romans 14:19..peace and mutual edification.

In full disclosure, I did have to google the verse to fill in a couple of holes where my memory didn't serve, but you get the gist, right? In the middle of my work day, when I was dealing with this conflict the method worked. I was able to deal with a hardship, in the moment, in a way that would honor God and hopefully demonstrate the Gospel.

So tell me, what are your strategies for memorizing or applying scripture to your daily life?

Want to memorize together?

I am working through one scripture per month, I'd love for you to join me!

Where morning dawns, where evening fades,
you call forth songs of joy
— Psalm 65:8
